Ok "Kids".... now that your both out of corner. :laughing7: Here's the latest update on MY .22 build.

I got my mounting hardware in for the sling, bi-pod, monopod now. My hardshell case arrived today also. And I had a few bricks of high end ammo arrive also which I'll use "down the road" to try. And I'll probably have to try out many others to experiment with till I find what "this" rifle likes to shoot.

I'm NOT locked into using a monopod / bipod but just want the "twist on" option. Early next week I'll take rifle to a gunsmith to float the barrel and bed the the receiver and lap some "high end" scope rings. Then I'll start running a few hundred "clean burning" rounds through this rifle. This meaning not "over the counter" rounds.

For those interested I'll post some pics when this rifle is complete. And I still would like to hear from other folks who have experience in shooting competition or have built a .22 target rifle as I am trying. I'd like to hear / learn from those who have. Thanks... Brad

As compared to what Duckshot... another selfie, a house, dog, cat, a riot or a politician being on the internet? Personally I like my guns and truly enjoy shooting them with the grandkids. :dontknow:

And, if this rifle isn't capable of 1" groups @ 100 yds. I'll be very disappointed after finding the correct ammo. Hell, my almost stock Ruger 10/22 holds 3/8" groups @ 50 yds. all day long (using "high end" ammo). And that's with a cheap lower end scope (Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40MM around $200.00). I feel if I made any mistake thus far on this build it will be the scope... again (Vortex Strike Eagle 4-24X50MM $500.00). I probably went "cheap" again but it won't be the rifle's fault as I can easily change the scope. I'm taking the rifle to gunsmith tomorrow morning for further machine work. Hopefully can have back in a week...?
 

You cant go wrong w/a 1022.....Whatever you want to do w/it..........And there is a reason for that !:)

You are probably right (are) across the board especially concerning a Ruger bought 10/22... but it's also the reason "high end" manufactures mimic this build and complete / machine it to the highest degree. And not many folks want to spend thousands of dollars to utilize this exact machining except to compete. But I highly doubt ANY Ruger made 10/22 could ever compete against a Volqnartsen, Anschutz or a KIDD built 10/22. And my stock Ruger 10/22 came "alive" when I started to use very expensive ammo with it. I can't wait to play with this build and good ammo together.

Not many folks have a 10/22 target rifle in their "toolbox". But Ruger certainly came up with a great concept!

i shot a 5 round group under a DIME without holes showing. Tim, the only one that could vouch for me is gone. .222 from a stock 700 BDL with varmint barrel. TTC

Well now son...... Thats pretty good shooting.... Here is a 300 yard ,3 shot group I printed w/my Rem. 700 BDL in 25-06.Custom loads/no bull barrel/no trigger work.Six to twenty four scope :) And it has, & will print this all day long :)
And, I owe most of what I can do w/a weapon to my beloved friend... My mentor,The late,the Great, Marine Gunny Sargent .Carlos Hathcock ....And now you know ....the rest of the story.

I met White Feather when he was in a wheel chair. Would not sign my copy of One Shot One Kill. Pooh! TTC
 

Gunny Paul Hermann told me in '85 (Camp Perry police sniper instructor school) that Carlos's most famous kill was a "fluke". He was shooting at a target stooping down to take a drink. Hathcock pulled the trigger. The VC then stood up and got it in the middle of the chest. He got the kill anyway and a lot of ribbing! TTC
 

Limitool, with all the expert advice you are getting plus your own Due Diligence, I am terrified about returning to our favorite road with my detectors.
You could and probably would shoot the little hangy down part of my ear off if you saw me.
Any plans for a night vision scope for it?

Brad... After we talked yesterday about Shooting Benches, I came across this video of Amanda Mertz building what appears to be a quality Shooting Bench. However, I could not evaluate the quality of the Shooting Bench because I could not take my' eyes off of her equipment.:wink:;D I even had to stop and rewind probably 100 times or more to pop my' eyeballs back in my head and to wipe the drool off my' computers keyboard. Maybe you can do a better job of evaluating her' equipment, ugh I mean Shooting Bench build.:dontknow:::):toothy2:

 

Well that is some fine shooting you guys! But shooting dime groups @ 100 yds or a 3 hole group like posted above @ 300 yds would be a little tougher with a rimfire setup I believe. This build I'm doing will never compete with a centerfire rifle/ammo setup at all. I'm going to shoot a brick of Eley Club ammo through it then clean the hell out of it... and then move up to higher grade ammo choices. Hopefully during the first 500 rounds I get to learn this scope a little better also. I got the rifle to the gunsmith today. Also got to see some of his work that he did from scratch on gun builds. It was amazing! This old fart knew EXACTLY what I wanted done and the reason for it... period. After lying out the work I wanted done I asked him "Any idea or about what all this work will cost... or close?" His answer... "Why do you care after bringing me this?" It probably was a dumb question in hindsight.

Frank buddy.... Thanks for the post and I'm gonna check it out in just a few minutes guy. Looks like a good start to a wood shop porn video to me! :laughing7: I wonder how she is on helping with Toy Boxes...? Now Frank your help this summer was grrrreatly appreciated but between you and her I'll just have to take a chance on her. Hopefully you understand (buddy!).
 

I guess the whole point of me starting this thread was to "meet" a T-net member who has experience in this realm of rim-fire target shooting. Yes, I can join some other sites and will soon but I was just hoping someone on this site had some experience in building a world-class shooting rim-fire rifle for competition. So I'm going "down" with my first build be it good or bad based upon my choices.

Now... I'd like to know where some local rimfire competitions are held and learn. But I don't want to "sign up" until I learn my first .22 build. I haven't surfed the net or inquired at all to date but I'm sure there's some somewhere within 100-300 miles of Centerville, TN...?

I'd ask your gunsmith about shoots. He likely knows a local or two that participates.
You could ask at Four Seasons there in Centerville too...
 

Check the NRA site. If it ain't listed there, it is only a small local shoot. TTC
