Seeking tips on avoiding false signals

I'm a newbie to hunting relics with a metal detector. While out hunting, I can't stand it chasing a signal that ends up coming from my shovel, pinpointer, wallet, or something else. Besides leaving the wallet at home, does anyone have advice on clearing out bad signals? I know I can discriminate, but doesn't that get in the way of finding good relics? Thanks!

picking up a signal from your shovel is not a false signal . it is an unwanted signal, prevented by not putting the shovel next to the machine.

A false signal is when you get a signal , dig down and nothing is found.
a false is most often caused by ground minerals.
ground balance often , it's important and needed in your area.

you can also get false signals if your search coil wire is not wrapped around the shaft and is hitting brush and such.

I lived and relic hunted Fredericksburg for 30 years , lot's of relics still to be had from The Rev ,war of 1812 and civil war , dig those iffy signals. good luck..
