On Saturday, Chris and I decided to go on a "Permission Mission." We knocked on one door, but no one was home. As we were walking away, I laughed and said, "You know what? This is a sign that we are going to find another site that is going to be killer." Well, we were driving to another location, when we saw Mr. Farmer out in the field...harvesting corn where an early homesite sat! I instantly blurted, "YES! We are coming here tomorrow!" We already have standing permission for his farm.
We pulled up to the field on Sunday morning and walked out into it with high hopes of digging some coppers. Right when I turned my machine on, I started hearing iron...lots of it...and it was crackling and sputtering and doing what iron always loves to do. Within the first two minutes, I found a small Colonial cuff button. I knew the day was going to be a bonanza after that.
I eventually got a beautiful-sounding "Half Dollar" reading on my analog machine. It turned out to be this wonderful late-date Coronet cent! I was ecstatic. I got my copper for the day.
I ended the day with 15 buttons, two pewter spoon pieces, a shot musketball, a thimble, a tiny brass buckle, and two Indian Heads (1860 and 1864).
I am looking forward to going back and seeing what else this early dweller lost for our team! It should be an exciting adventure, that is for sure!
