Yes, periodically I clean the rust off, apply hot wax and sharpen the edge with handheld metal files which doesn't take long at all. I don't have a lesche or hori hori so cheapo thrift store trowels get their edges sharpened too, but that usually requires a grinding wheel as lots more metal needs to be removed. Not as relevant for detecting, but for bottle digging in wet dirt lots of muck will stick to the shovel which is inefficient, so having a cleaned-up waxed shovel really helps discourage excessive caking-on of mud.

Yes every year before fire season.
All it takes is a sharp mill basterd file and about 10 minutes.

Really helps with cutting through roots.

Mill files are just as capable as making a piece of metal rounded as sharp. The trick is to knowing when to quit.
