very interesting relic, any idea about what year that was found, and where it was found?
Yes it was found in Kentucky in the Ohio river bottoms I believe it was found in 1981 my dad was ten when he found it.

It looks like it was a left handed welk shell from Florida or the gulf coast. Send a pic of the other side showing the opening. It was most likely traded up from down south. It is not a fresh water mollusk

Just my opinion and Iā€™m not a shell expert but have seen some finished shell plummets. I think itā€™s a preform plummet you can see the groove on the stem end I believe they were going to remove the other end but never finished it. Itā€™s a cool find cause Iā€™ve never seen a preform of one

I don't think it's heavy enough for use as a plummet. The groove was made to cut the closed end off exposing the long center piece. It was then cut into sections and used as a tubular bead or smaller beads.
