Shield Nickel, Tombac, Whatsit - ID please

Last week was the first time I went out in a while and these are the finds for Sunday. I have not gotten around to posting till just now and had to dust off my T-net login... The photos are for each of the three sites I went to. I wish I would have taken some in the field pics. The quarter is just for size reference. I am interested in any info on the buttons in particular, the two large disks, rosettes I guess, and the bent spiked-wing-scroll-whatsit. I am trying to get an age range on the sites based on these finds. Thank you for viewing and for any info you can provide.

No idea on the whatsit, but I DO know that that is a superb shield nickel! Congrats on your finds.

Thank you! I was excited about it as I had never found one before. My cousin that I was with that got me started detecting was jealous of that nickel as he had only found one in his 15 years of detecting. I really like tombacs but they never have any words on them and I am curious about that small green button too. Maybe a button guy will know.

I agree, nice nickel. Is the thimble silver?

No I wish it was but it was my first so I included it. The one small flat button without the shank has a thick silver Gilt on the face which is intact though bubbled.

Congrats on that first Shield Nickel. It's killing me not having been able to find one after nine years searching. Yours looks to be in excellent shape for a dug shield nickel. Sweet old buttons and rosettes too. Don't be a stranger. Great finds!

Great finds. The nickel is awesome. I'm also liking the old buttons, that site does have some good age to it. Good luck on cleaning it out.

Tombacs don't have words because they were made in the late 1700's before the practice of stamping backmarks on buttons was common. Flat buttons with backmarks are almost always early 1800's. Incredible digs... that shield is amazing!

I would just call it a brass furniture decor, I think it will be a tough positive ID, so many options.

So far your finds start in the late 18th C.

Congrats on one sweet shield nickel. I have recovered 4 or 5 of them over the years but none of them look that good.
