Shield Nickel

I have a dateless shield nickel and wanted to get the date out of it. I tried vinegar for a week and I got no date on it and it looks like the details are now less sharp. Any tips/suggestions on how to get the date off of the coin. Thanks

I actually looked at this coin at a different light and saw the beginning of the date (the 18 part). I will soak it more in vinegar, but anyone is still welcome to give me different suggestion. I do know about Nic- A- Date, but don't want to use it on a shield nickel.

Got the date of it barely. It is a 1873 Open 3 variety. Not bad for 50 cents.

I will post a scan tomorrow. If I tried to take a photo of the date up close, it would be very blurry. The date was also only readable when I pointed a flashlight at it.
