Ship or Pier?

Hello all. I am new here and share interest in the 1715 fleet. I found this about two feet down on the east coast and would like to know if this would be from a ship or a pier? Thanks.

The wood on the iron looks like a ring porous hardwood. If so, it is likely oak which points toward a ship part rather than a pier. Most piers are made of softwood. If you are sufficiently interested, you could have the wood could be identified.
