One thing I noticed in my recent hunts, especially while testing the AT-PRO, was that I usually had several quarters, dimes, pennies. But, only 1 or 2 nickels if any at all.

I got to thinking, what, nobody's losing nickels anymore?! ;)

So, I went out today to concentrate on nickels. Just to see what difference it would make. I knew where they should VDI at but for some reason, I was missing them. I went for an hour at a park that I KNEW had been hunted, a LOT! (Even I have hunted there so there can't be anything left, right? Wrong.)

Anyway, below is the results. It appears to have worked. Got a few nickels and even a Canadian dime which I think is made of nickle.

On the odd side, I found what I thought was just a large iron washer. Turns out that it's either brass or copper. Pretty big and solid too. I'm going to have to make a separate box to hold just the copper/brass I've found. LOL

And, the two tiny shells. What the heck are they?

Thanks for peeking!

HH!

I find nickels on just about every hunt. I have learned what they sound like on all of my machines.
And those are Nail gun caps

Thanks for the info!

I know what you mean about nickels too. I just noticed that with the AT-PRO I just wasn't picking up on them like I figured I should be. So, I went out to see why. I'm thinking I started eliminating them, mentally, because they're close to pulltabs. At least the ear still works, I was beginning to doubt. :)

I have the same problem with my AT Pro, nickels just don't jump out at you. You have to really work to get them. They are so close to the tab that I think we run over them. I have found that the vdi almost has to indicate 49-50 to be a nickel. I haven't really found enought nickels to tell the sound different yet. If you use any type of discrimination in the tab vicinity you will probalby miss them completely. I use my At Pro on custom pro mode and discriminate nothing.

I was using the custom pro setting too, but I was discriminating the first notch of 40 and down. I noticed that the nickel shows up mostly at 53 (in my highly mineralized ground). The tabs tend to show approximately the same.
I'm used to my Groundhog and that is a nickel eating machine! :)

I sometimes wonder about the "dig everything" mindset. If I did that all my holes would overlap! LOL What a mess that would make! :)

One tone anolog meter, grew up on those, had some awesome finds too!!!

The "mental discriminator" is a tricky machine to adjust. After your 40th pull tab, you see that same number on your machine and you silently let it go.:dontknow: Or how about you find something really awesome or unique, and you start sweeping again, then ten yards later you realize you haven't paid any attention to your headphones or screen at all, and trudge back to the last hole you dug to start over!:BangHead:

Thanks again for the info on the nail gun. I was just thinking though, how impressive is it, that the AT-PRO would even pick up these two tiny shells!? I don't think I gave it credit enough.

HH!

They also make blanks for starting pistols that look like that.

There are less nickels in the ground than any other coin. You are going to find less nickels even if you dig it all.
