Short hunt and an interesting find

Tonight I hit a small hay field that was cut today. I have had permission to do this piece for a year or so but this is the first time on it. I did not expect to find much. The only two keepers were a nice "ball" button and the other Thingamajig. I have no clue what it is As you can see it swings open to reveal a short post. Under the post are the words ( PAT JUNE 29, 76 Z&M ) The girl on the front appears to be on roller skates. I am open to ideas on this one.

it's some kind of clasp I'd guess, the pointed bits on the back would have attached it to cloth or more likely leather.....That's all I've got.......I'll bet someone will figure it out though

The closest I can come up with for the whatsit is this-http://tinyurl.com/3k23mql. I think this could be some other version of it. I have searched patent dates and I can't come up with anything else. Nice to know what it is for sure though. Unique find.

Very interesting find indeed. The tines on the reverse are telling me that it was possible attached to a piece of cloth. Maybe a shirt, coat or hat. It looks like a third one may have broken off at the top as well. If that's the case, I'm still not sure why it would flip open like that unless it opened, went through a hole then snapped shut like a button?

Love the girl on roller skates! My guess is that this device is a fancy version of a roller-skate key IF that flat piece with post will swivel out or otherwise move so its flat end (or the post itself?) could be inserted into the skate to tighten up the skate. Girls used to slide their shoes into the metal roller skates while the skate mechanism was loose, then use a "key" to tighten up the part of the skate that gripped the sides of their shoes. I was one of those girls in 1950's, though our keys were simple single hunks of bent metal. If this one is a roller skate key, it's so fancy that maybe it came along with pricier roller skates than we had, or from an earlier era. Regardless of what your find is, the artwork is very nice. WOW!! Rollerskating in 1760 Now this piece really has me wondering what it is. I will clean it up and post again on the What is it section.
