I haven't been out much in the last couple of weeks because I was sick. I'm starting to feel better now, so I bundled up yesterday and hunted in the woods for a couple hours. I was in an area that is forested now, but back in the 1930's, it was a clearing. It was nice hunting because it wasn't real trashy, and I was digging just about every signal.

After a couple of pop tops, I dug down about 5 inches and pulled out a muddy disc. I knew it wasn't silver :( , but it looked interesting. When I got it home and cleaned it up, I found that it was an 1898 V-nickel - and my first. ;D. She's not in the best shape, but that's OK. I also found an early wheat - still soaking so I can read the date, some clad pennies and ammunition remnants. I know it's not the greatest bounty, and it's certainly not the silver I was looking for, but it turned out to be a decent hunt. Thanks for checking it out!

Neil, well done  I remember how excited I was when I found my first "V".

It's nice to know FOR SURE there are still "oldies" out in those woods

The weather should be warming up out there by Wednesday. . . there's good stuff waiting :)

Sweet coin! And an old one to boot! Most of my V-nickels are always in the early 1900s. Good find. Congrats on your first!
Thanks BK! When I was cleaning it & saw that first "18" I did a little dance at the sink!

Congratulations on the V! I also recently found my first, an 1896, and it was really worn down. Believe it or not, it was at the camp. Now all we need are shields and we're set!
Thanks Joe! I hope you get your shield this weekend!

Any coin that starts with an"18--" or lower number is pretty cool. Great find, hope you're feeling better!
Thanks DV! Yeah, when I stopped & realized that this thing is 108 years old I was amazed.

She's a beaut! I would love to find one that old. Did you find it with the SE or the DFX?

WTG,Congrats on the v nickel and hope more to come !!!!

VERY COOL! You're first V nickel is a pre-1900! WOW!! It took my about 15 years to dig a pre-1900 V nickel. I found about a dozen over several years that dated from 1901 to 1912 ~ but then just a few months ago I dug a 1887.

CONGRAT'S!!!

Thanks LF! I was using the SE. I haven't picked the DFX up in quite a while. I've been tempted to, but I really need to learn the SE. I'm either going to sell the DFX or use it for recreational clad hunting. ;D

Congrat's on the V Mr.Kim....Mine is still out there somewhere.Nice Dig!!!

WTG "kd". Nice "V". Any "V" is very nice to find. I have found a couple over
the years in Southern New Mexico at an old mining town. They were in the
early 1900's.

Real glad to hear your feeling better. Hope it continues.

Good Luck and don't give up on that "DFX". It's a good machine as well as
the "SE".

Sounds like you have a good place to hunt. Nice v nickle.

Congrats on the V nick!!!! I would love to find one myself ;)

So I'm curious, what made you think the clearing would have traffic? Was it a park-like field where kids potentially played at? It's obviously giving you some goods... and it sounds like there will be many more coming out of there. Don't forget to get all up under the brush and trees.

HH!

Congrats on the V nickel KD. :icon_king:
I've been dying to find one with a date myself. I've only found one other (dateless) so far.
Way to go.

Thanks Root! There was a large clearing with a picnic pavillion in the late 1930's. I figured it must have had some traffic from picnicers trying to get away from the main area for privacy. Sometime after that, the county let the trees grow up on the largest part of the clearing that's the farthest from the pavillion and parking. The nice thing is the lack of heavy trash that we all know plagues the CCFP. It was real easy hunting. Watercolor & I will be hitting it again soon!

Thanks Doug! You probably want one just like I want to dig a CW bullet. Watercolor & I went out today to another spot in the woods not too far from there & he found a 1900's V and a Buff in the same hole! There's stuff out there... I hope you get yours soon!
