Two sunbursts from the sunset of the South. Today's hunt was short and in an area I'd hunted many times before but cows were in the pasture I wanted to search. As it turns out, that was fortuitous.
These NC sunbursts were lost in the days immediately preceding or during heavy skirmishing between Kilpatrick's cavalry forces and CSA cavalry and infantry units in April, 1865.
The Type III cleaner is one of only two I've ever found that wasn't dropped. It was located just a few yards from the sunbursts and may have been fired at the men who lost them.
Happy hunting,
Jim
P.S. Thanks, cows.

I've dug state seal buttons from NC, SC, and VA in the Raleigh area, but never an NC sunburst. Still on my list.
