Shot Gun Alley - Day 3 + The Trackway Site - Day 2 - 2 Hammered & 2 Roman Silvers...

How do we do it. The 4 silvers came in the first 3 hours. In this order; Cru'dad got a Hammered, I got a Hammered, Cru'dad got a Siliqua (first ever from this site), & I got a Siliqua (holed).
We spent about 3 hours on Shot Gun Alley & got the following:

10 Bronze Roman Coins (1 holed & 1 altered)
Spectacle Buckle
18th C Pidcocks Token (Farthing)
Broken Hammered Penny of Ed I
Hammered Penny of Richard The Lion-heart (only our 3rd & this one being the best):icon_thumright:
Siliqua of Julian II (nibbled)
Siliqua of Arcadius (holed) Because it's silver & holed its now considered out of circulation & jewelry & is therefore considered Treasure. I've declared it & I have a feeling the Museum will acquire this one because I know a mate who had the same thing happen.
An altered Marcus Aurelius Sestertius. Its been bashed around the edge to rise it up, its counter-stamped on the reverse with 3 ring & dots & weights 306 grains. I believe this was altered in the Saxon period to be a 300 grain weight! If I can prove this, its a very special find as this Site dates from 480-600AD next to the earlier Roman Site.

After lunch we moved to 'The Trackway Site' for about 3 hours & got:

2 bronze Roman Coins (1 holed)
Top of a Saxon 6th C Small-Long Brooch
Jetton
17th C Token
Rose Farthing
18th C Clog Clasp
Medicine Weight
Bits...

What a day!

What a day you had! Don't know what i like most. Cru Dads Siliqua because of the contrast in the patina, Richard Lionhearts Penny or the Ses. Never seen a coin worked like this. Sounds really special. Let us know what the BM has to say about that. And finally your pierced Siliqua. I guess you never thought about the amount of holed coins when you found the first one there. How many did you got till now? Are these all Saxon related?

Lost count but Cru'dad will have the records. Do you mean this site or total from all sites?
There is evidence of holed Roman Coins turning up in Saxon graves but none in Roman ones that I know of. There is no reason they couldn't have holed them in the Roman period but I believe the vast majority are during the Early Saxon Period.

I was talking this site because the last hunts there got you a good amount of them. For the site they look clearly Saxon related. The occasionally holed roman coins i get have no clear relation to early medieval sites.

Awesome!!! Outstanding!!! Congrats!!!

13 from Shot Gun Alley. 29 including the 2 nearby Sites - Track-Way & 'The Hill'.

Congrats on the pint raising day for both of you. The Richard hammered is really a fine example as is Cru'Dad's Siliqua. :occasion14:

Is the Richard 1190?

This to me is interesting. In the US, a holed coin is considered "damaged" by collectors and has far less value than an non-holed similar coin. In the UK a holed coin like you found is considered "treasure" and the museum will jump on it. For me, I think a coin coming out of the ground with a hole is far more special than one without. Great finds Cru, as usual. Gary

Yes, but funny old thing, when it comes to valuing it for their collection they consider it damaged (less valuable to a collector) instead of a very rare Saxon object.....lol
But I'll take whatever they offer, it won't be a big enough amount to argue over. I'll leave those battles for the more expensive.

UPDATE:

From a leading expert & book writer of Weights:

''The weight of 306 grains is 19.8 grams, and this suggests three gold aurei of about 6.6 grams, which is about right for a period after Marcus Aurelius. Let me know if you are thinking of selling it.''

I think he is suggesting it was altered in the Roman period, I'm not so sure as it might be Marcus Aurelius but it has quite a bit of wear, and I'm not sure why they wouldn't use something manufactured. What I do know is when a leading expert wants to buy it, they probably have never seen one like it.
