Old shotgun shell heads are fairly common. However, they are one of the few things we find (coins excluded) that can be dated.
I'm teaching my 12yo nephew to metal detect. I gave him my Ace 350 and trained him in trashy parks. Today, we went out into the woods, and hit a honey hole of vintage shotgun shell heads. The pic shows our finds after 30 min, or so. By the end of the day, we pulled 40+, and left others behind.
We came home and cleaned them up. Then, we went on the internet, and looked them up. Wow...I was impressed at how old some of the could be...and my nephew...he thinks metal detecting is the best thing ever.
The area we hunted can be dated to the the late 1800's to early 1900's. Although, we didn't find any coins, it's fair to assume they are there.
