Show your G10's-

Hi Hunters, I need your input, some hunters aren't familar with the grading system. I would very much appreciate if probably the more experienced collectors would show their G10's.
This is my G8, I graded it this because its a common type, also it as a rather large percussion mark on it.
I've not seen this topic addressed so, show us those exquisit Points PLEASE !!!

Re: Show your G10's-

badandy's point is probably the closest piece I've seen so far to a G10. It has the size, the workmanship, it looks like very nice material, and I can't see any discernable damage. The only thing that might keep it from being a 10 in my mind is that the base looks to be cocked a little to the right of the blade so it doesn't have that perfect symmetry.

I would give it a 9.95, but then again I'm the Russian judge and I have bias toward you American dogs. ;D ;D

Re: Show your G10's-

Afternoon,

Yep that's a nice on to be sure. Just be sure to make the distinction that size is not the only criteria for perfection on a point. Many of the smaller point types can be quite exquisite without being overly sized. Points such as the Agee, Friley, San Patrice, and Catahoula though small can be very well made indeed. Everyone likes to see the 6"+ points, but man is not known by inches alone...lol Give those wee points their just do as well.

None of these are G-10's but I enjoyed finding them....need to break out some of my frames and see if any of the points actually make the top grade.

Happy Hunting,

Atlantis.

Re: Show your G10's-

HI there everyone Molly called me out to this place to show you all what a true G-10+ looks like. These are as close to the best as I can get, but do have others that people call G-10s but I am hard on my rocks but love everyone one. Any points rock I find is treated like a G-10, well almost all.

Here is the best I can do for my best personal find in flint. I'll let everyone else do the grading, but thanks for looking!

badandy

Ok, now we're getting somewhere, as blades go I would class Andys blade as a G10, looks to be pefectly symetrical, excellent material, nice size too. I would also say this is a fine rare example.
I was hoping you'd repost this outstanding blade Andy.
Thankyou.

Molly. :)

As Dorkfish eluded to the criteria for such a piece is strict. It's all in the eye of the person grading. In my opinion a piece has to be made of the best possible grade of material for the source, be perfectly symmetrical, thin, large for the type, with workmanship that is second to none. If the point in question could be better in any of these areas it's not a G-10. I've seen thousands of high end points and I can confidently say that only 5 of those were true G-10 pieces.

hardin.jpg

Here is a hardin. Spectacular example to most people and a find of a lifetime. Not a G-10 though. Material could be a lot nicer. Could be longer, wider, thinner with closer serrations. So I give it a G-7.

Picture032.jpg

Killer snyders. Same as above except for the part about the serrations. I give it a G-8.

Picture041.jpg

Dovetail. Killer find for anyone. Same as above. I give it a G-7.

062506V141H.jpg

Personal find here. Tom Davis graded it a 9. Could be wider, longer, thinner, better material. I give it a 7.

The Hardin is an exceptional point. I think you're a little strict on grading but, that's what the grading system is all about.
Excellent examples & straight up grading.
Thankyou Adam, I was hoping you'd post a few of your excellent finds.

Excellent points Atlantis, I'm not sure I agree with your quote though. "Man is not known by inches alone...lol" ;D
I agree, some of the smaller points, especially Frileys & Catahoula are exceptionally made, it's just finding them whole, its not an easy task, but you manage this just great.
I hope you do go through your many frames & post a few more fine points.
Thankyou for taking the time to post.

Never knew there was a grading system. I'm sure everything we find is pretty low on the scale, I did find a rather nice triangle point, but I had to give it up. Not found by me, but this is the second best in the collection.

Still a beautiful point JB, I can relate to lack of nice materials, Rhyolite(NC) will never be referred to as exquisit material
Thankyou for posting.

Now the reason I got Jeremy to post a few of his G10's is to show just how splendid materials can be. The workmanship is second to none.
Excellent examples, this is what I was hoping for, to show new collectors just what materials are out there ( not just Ole Rhyolite, lol )
The two clear? points are fantastic examples. Just proves how talented American Indians, (with workable materials), were. Artists in their own right.
Thankyou for taking the time to post these for me my friend.

Molly. :)

Re: Show your G10's-

Not a problem. I will have to dig in the frames to get some of the good color out for everyone. I am from Ga and from there I have plan white points and when I moved out here I am like a kid in a candy store. I still find points that are made from colors that I havnt found yet. I am still looking for that green one. I know its out there with my name one it just sitting there all alone, in the cold wet mud.

Re: Show your G10's-

Not G 10's, I wouldn't go so far as to call any of my own such, but these are a few of my favourites. Thanks for the thread Molly. Sorry for not posting sooner.

Gotta love those western rocks! I can take you to a place where you would have a decent chance of finding a green one, maybe even a paleo. The hardest color for me to find is blue. I love the colorful material too, that's why too much obsidian and basalt can get boring.

Re: Show your G10's-

Shawn, those are super lanceolates, nice to see some Paleo.
Thankyou for posting them.
Hope you feel better soon my friend. :)

I would love to take you up on your offer to go out. Where abouts are you on the great Basin?
I know what you mean about to much black and gray. I head down to the desert or try to once a year to get in the last bit of sunshine before it rains. Shot me an email. anyajeremy@hotmail.com I have one that is close to blue when wet I will dig it out some time and show ya.

Re: Show your G10's-

Here are a few I would consider G-10's, sorry I got carried away a bit. All from Ohio and Kentucky.

-Pinetree (harrodsburg Chert)
-Fort Ancient (Black Ice)
-Jacks Reef (Kentucky Blue)
-Dovetail (Carter Cave Flint)
