Id love to get a pinpointer of some sort but I cant afford it right now.
Ive been looking at getting or making some sort of soil sifter and realized Garrett makes one that fits a 5 gallon bucket.
Seems like it could save some time.
Anyone ever used anything like this?
Found one on ebay.

If you're talking about digging targets on the beach/sand, then NO, that is not the kind of "sifter" you want. You would want this kind:

The 3rd type down is a popular style.

The type you have posted a picture of, is more for something where you have already brought dirt or sand or whatever up, and want to sift it. Ie.: more like a stationary sifter.

Im definitely not hunting on the beach or in any sand.
To reiterate, this is for soil. Like top soil. :)

Could you be a bit more specific, Death?

What is it you will be looking for, sifting the soil?

I've seen where people set up a 3' square of hardware cloth on a frame, set it at an angle,
and shoveled to it... perhaps a couple different sizes of screen, depending upon what you are looking for?

Are you looking for metallic, or non-metallic objects?

Most of us really enjoy a MD because it really narrows down a field of search.
Frequently it leads to discovery of non-metallic items.

More info you can give us, the better we can help.

Thats exactly what I plan to use it for. Sift through shovel fulls that my MD gives a target in. Particularly on steep hillsides or very leafy areas which make looking through piles of dirt a PITA.
That last link is kind of what I was thinking about. Buying some mesh and making my own. I liked the idea of the Garrett one for two reasons. One its plastic and wont set off my MD. Two it fits on a 5 gallon bucket which makes dumping the sifted soil back into the hole from which it was dug very easy.

lol. go get an old tennis racket and hold it over the bucket..no metal there... :icon_jokercolor:

Haha...i can see me walking around with a MD, a bucket and a tennis racket.
Strange character for sure. ;D

If you want a pinpointer, but don't have the money, you can get one for under $20 at Harbor Freight or on eBay. Mine has worked fine, especially for the cost.

Thanks, ill look into that pinpointer.

I don't like the idea of anyone using a shovel to recover a target because of the damage they do to the ground. Granted in the boonies this is fine, but the next thing you'll see is some newbie using this set up in a park so we all get kicked out. It is best to learn pinpointing with the detector. If you can't lever it out of the ground with a screwdriver a plug can be cut and soil placed on a piece of cloth for placing it back in the hole. This saves the coin from getting lost again in the grass or weeds.

We used to retreive many coins before electronic pinpointers came out.

I totally agree with Sandman! That is why one cannot get permission to go on private property because of the mess some fool made digging with a shovel and ruining the grass or garden. Learn to use your detector to pinpoint and cut a plug first. remove the plug and put it aside. Then, scoop the dirt onto a towel until you find your target. Put the dirt from the towel in the hole. Put the plug of grass or whateven on top and press it down with your foot. No one will ever see that you were there and when you ask again to come back....non problemo....Si?

cut the bottom out of a 5 gallon bucket
lay some screen over the bottom and melt the plastic over/into the mesh
then trim off the extra screen

No one but you two said anything about digging in grass or a garden. :) I am digging on a very steep, leafy hillside back in the woods. This location is way in the country. Far from any park, yard or home.
