I put this sifter together for just a hair under $10. Works pretty good....but would rather it be on a tri pod!

Npw that cool seeing a picture. Did you already have it or get the idea from here? Greg do you have a tri pod showing how the top three poles fasten together? I have a bucket sifter for water I need to show.
no pics but i know pickaway has picks of his.its easy to build.i took 3 2x4s put a miter on the tops and bottoms attached 2 of them with wood screws and then attached the 3rd 2x4 to the already attached 2 with a few wood screws, then screw in a big hook into the top of the tripod in one of the 2x4s.put an eye hook on each side of the screen and run 2 pieces of rope through the eye hooks and tie them(each side) to the hook on the tripod.easy to adjust for your height and easy to break down the tripod, thats why i like the wood screws so you can take it apart for transport, just need a cordless drill and a shovel.i dig that bucket sifter!i have heard of guys using snow shovels on the gravel bars.they would drill a bunch of holes in the shovel and then use it as a sifter. :headbang:

I am liking what I am seeing!!! That is a serene shot of ancient recovery tactics you got there Pickaway. I was thinking light weight alum poles but if I am using a 4-wheeler no problemo. Could also pre drill and bolt together. I do have a square shovel Greg I took a cutting wheel to and cut slits all out of it. It lets the water out and semi sifts before going into the sifter. I wonder if people realise the work all this is?? haha.
We need to form the Treasure And Sifting Society be T. And .S .S. for short :read2:

Yep I could even see leaning two up against the bluff or shelter. Look forward to giving all these ideas a go on some sites  Great pictures Pickaway.

yea pick has a real nice dig spot,a very productive and serene spot to be diggin.i dig the sifter society.T A S S,nice acronym.you are right richard, most people dont realise how much preparation and work is involved in our quest for treasure.i guess when we signed on to be curators of the past we decided we were alright with doing all the dirty fun/work.lol.

I screen a lot, and have tried several different types (I like the smaller tripod version the best because it's easy to carry), but the key to screening is making sure you have the right size mesh. If you use too small a mesh for the soil type it is going to be a frustrating experience.

My screen has 1" heavy duty inch mesh at the bottom, and I carry rolled up squares of smaller mesh in a piece of PCV pipe and some wire to insert/hold the smaller mesh in over the 1" mesh. I also carry a small hand held plastic screen for beads in sandy areas (which I use about as much as the other screen.)

I like the bucket strainer, I'm going to have to make one of those.

Nice thread and pics and info. This thread has me geared up to make a couple of sifting rigs for the spring.

I like those photos pickaway, real noice.

looks good wildcat. looks heavy tho. you can put some triangle wood cits in each corner to help reinforce the screen

Thanks. It works good the way it is....but is back breaking even with the handles. I am currently experimenting with a tri pod and another sifter idea. Will post pics when finished

Hey Tn, very nice thread, and very informative. Gotta build a tripod for future trips. I have a place that is begging to be dug and sifted. Posted some pics of the shelter way back.
The sifters got me thinking of a gold hunting method I learned years ago from a cousin out in Yosemite. Mind, he wasn't looking for artifacts, but I can see where it would be of some benefit for our use, artifact hunting.
When looking in water that is running, i.e. river or stream, it is difficult to see through the sheen of same. Try this...

Build a box (his was 12"x 12") but upsizing for our purpose could be beneficial, I think. Use 1x12 lumber and just build a square or rectangular box with no bottom. Then get you a piece of plexi-glass to cover the bottom and seal. (you don't want water coming in) Put a couple slots in the sides up near the top for handholds. The idea is to place the box on the surface of the water, plexi-glass down, and look thru the top down into the box. Breaking the sheen of the water, you will be amazed how much better you will be able to see into the water. My cousin (looking for gold) used this method quite successfully searching various creeks and looking into cracks and fissures in running water. What he found was truly fantastic, but that is another story.

Best of luck to all,
BW

Hey you ole Texas hound dog. Good to see ya back !! I heard another guy on here mention using a cut out 5 gallon bucket with a plexi botom. I am going to try it on the rivers where I dive. When diving with a mask and looking around you can drift for miles downsream ! Probably not to bright and the plexiglass might be safer. I am gonna make someting and give it a try. Did you kill much over on the farm?

Mr. Tn, Sure good to see you again, you old ridge runner. Got a nice 8 point, just legal. In certain counties there are special regulations now whereby the rack has to have at least a 13" inside spread. The farm is in one of those counties. You either shoot a big buck or a cull (spike or other undesired configuration). Overall I think it is a good law. Sure tastes good either way. How 'bout your season?

I saw a couple really good bucks for just a brief second. Never could get a good shot on them. Here are two from the camera. The one I would have shot and did see...I kept passing on decent deer and then went into a panic as the season was ending. I killed some deer for meat at that point. These deer survived the season and I will be back for them next year.
Glad you packed one in. I had a venison roast tonight that would melt in your mouth

. This is made from a Plastic Coca Cola Tray, I use this for Water Detecting. You could go larger and get one of those Bread Plastic trays, if you need something bigger

This is an old thread lol. I like the floating sifter GoldNugget. I saw my old bucket sifter and just used it the other day. That is a test of time. Me and the bucket !:laughing7:

I made a sifter bucket today and need to get a pooper scooper now. Just think what the neighbors will say, lol
