It was 19 degrees when I stepped out of truck this morning. You could only dig in sunny places, because the ground is frozen in the shade. That just never happens here. It never got above freezing today.

That didn’t stop P@tch, Kurtstuben and I from going hunting! And it was a good decision, because within 15 minutes, all of us had silver.

I got a cool Cub Scout medal. Some kid was bummed at the loss of this item. I like BSA items.

This was my second target. I placed it on a wheatie, to show you how small it is. It weighs .5 grams, and you know how small a half gram is! I almost threw it away, but a quick lick and close look seemed to indicate silver.

Once home, I cleaned it up, and sure enough, it’s marked STERLING. It’s a charm in the shape of a pocketbook.

When the dirt came out of this hole, it had a shiny coin in it.

P@tch had 3 silver coins, so this was a sight for sore eyes. Just a 46 Rosie, but I’m thankful for any silver coin. I also found a dozen wheaties. Silver coin 27 from this spot, in less than a month. Ouch.

I’ve been trying to dig more mid tones at the Honey Hole in hopes that a gold ring will show up. I have dug a ton of pull tabs and can slaw, but no gold rings... until today.

This sounded like a nickel but looked like a little gold ring. A close examination revealed a 1.7 gram 14K gold band.

Here it is with the 5 nickels I dug looking for it, and a shot of the 14k mint mark. Only my fourth gold item in 4 years.

Yeah it was cold, but I’ll do it again tomorrow.

Thanks for looking and good luck on your hunts.

That looks to be a great hunt, definitely worth braving the cold for some good finds.

Nice hunt Tom. You rock the silver Buddy. Nice gold as well.
Never got out of the teens here today and is 8 at the moment. Calling for it to be in the 40s and 50s next week so hopefully we'll get out.

Very nice hunt, congratulations! :occasion14:

Awesome hunt, in my opinion! I was out for about four hours today and came up with only clad and aluminum cans, so I would have LOVED to have had a day like yours. Great job!

I like that little charm....congrats on the gold too...

the ground in indy can't be dug with dynamite now

WooHoo! 🙌

Nice Tom! Gold is good.. Matter a fact I need some more :)

Beauty finds Tom. When you go against your better judgement, that’s when the goods arrive. Congrats to you and the Charlotte Mafia

Thanks RN. The cold is tough on me, but the thought of NOT hunting is even worse. We are looking forward to the warm up also. Keep warm, and remember that springtime will be here shortly brother!

Good little "refresh" lesson with the small charm Carolina. You almost never or at least seldom see anything sterling come out of the ground looking rusty, and it just might have been tossed in with the trash. When I dig something I really can not see IF it might be something, it goes into the pouch to be looked at better when home. The "purse" charm proves it. 19 degrees? You earned that gold.

I’m trying hard to “think like Scrappy”... digging it all and hunting the places too difficult for others to hunt. It’s not easy. But it has been productive.

Wishing you the best buddy!

Nice way to start 2018

Tom you're off to a heck of a start! 19 degrees = good gracious you are dedicated!

It was 3 degrees here when I woke up this morning. It'll start warming up Tuesday to the low 50's and it'll be time for my 2018 to begin.

Thanks man. The “red dirt” of the South coats everything and makes t look rusty. It’s a fine sticky clay.

It was cold, but I stayed in the sunshine so it was bearable. Not going hunting, makes me feel sick and anxious... I’d rather be cold than sick. Withdrawal symptoms I guess.

The charm made a sharp high tone, really sharp. It was shallow, maybe 2.5”. I thought it was aluminum can slaw, but the little ring had a flash of silver on it, and I knew the ring indicated NOT trash. I licked it, then wiped it with my finger, and sure enough, smooth dark gray and silver appeared. Check all recovered targets closely.
