My grandfather found this rock on a trip to southern ohio to get a load of coal with his father. he has never been able to identify it and is now very sick i would love to be able to tell him what it is he found all those years ago. http://imgur.com/a/V8fMG

I'd like to see a detector waved over that, and see what the VDI is that comes back. Also, a specific gravity test would help. In any case, it's a nice specimen.

Magnetic? Can a knife scratch it? If rubbed against a unglazed piece of porcelain, what color do you get?

Not magnetic, scratch it yes, it is kind of brittle actually

What about the last test?

Sorry to hear about your grandfather being ill. Don't take my word on it but it reminds me of a type of Platinum or Platinum ore, very nice whatever it is, let us know if you find out for sure.
