The chop marks were stamped on to indicate the the coin was of the correct weight...I believe. I've heard that there are a lot of fake Trade Dollars out there, so one with a chop mark would likely be real.
i was told the chop marks were made by the company that took them in for trade. Each company had a different chop mark. Anyone can make a fake chop mark it would be easier than making the coin.
