Mercury bonds to copper very well and before the dangers were known, people did this just because they could. It made the pennies look shiny and different and was a fun experiment.

I have polished zinc pennies with Simichrome, it will turn them silver.

We used to play with mercury when we were kids and yes, we coated pennies. Mercury may be the reason I became metal detectorist. It supposedly cause brain damage. Could explain a lot.

If you have a precise scale you can weigh them The wheat back is definitely plated. I have seen a few errors in the zincs that were coined on silver uncoated planchlets. Its unlikely that you have an error because it was found with the plate wheatie but you can tell by the weight
