1964 was the last year the U.S minted silver coins for circulation. One still occasionally finds silver coins in change but not that often these days. There is a site called "Coinflation.com" which you can google and they show the current melt value of all U.S. silver coins, and they update it regularly as the price of silver fluctuates up and down. Silver coins will have a different color than the clad coins, and are often very easily spotted in a pile of loose change once you have looked at both. You might also go to the "coin roll hunting" forum here, many folks get rolls of coins from banks and search them for silver coins, and some do quite well, and there is a lot of good info there.

Keep in mind the mint still produces silver dimes, quarters and halves from 1992 to present, minted for collectors. Occasionally they can be found in circulation, I've found modern silver coins in (proof) form.

Great information gunsil! I will mention that if any of the Quarters are blackened making the determination of Clad or Silver almost impossible, then don't forget the ring factor with Silver. Silver has a distinct ring to it when dropped on a table, counter or even floor!

The '65-70 Kennedy halves contain 40% silver and are worth more than face value also. Some foreign coins have silver in them too so you'll have to look those up to see when their cut-off date was.
