Silver Sorting Machine?

I was wondering if there was a silver sorting machine out there?

They have those Reydale machines that sort out the copper, why not have a silver sorter? I thought silver was lighter than clad ?

Yes, you could in theory make a "silver sorting" machine based on the same principle as a Ryedale or similar machines. But quite honestly it would be a lot of expense for very little profit. When it comes down to it, it is just as easy to rim check with a sound check than it is to build/buy a machine to do it for you. The reason why Ryedale and similar sorters are popular for pennies is because there isn't an easy way to check for copper pennies other than date checking them (and then weighing the '82s) which is really time consuming for how little each individual coin is worth. On the other hand, rim checking quarters and dimes are both incredibly easy, if you don't see a copper band, you need to check it to see if it is silver. When you are done with a roll do a sound check to make sure you don't miss anything. Even rim checking halves is rather easy (though some 40%ers do look identical to clad so you need to be diligent about the sound check).

So while you could make a silver sorting machine, it just wouldn't be practical unless you run a coinstar-type business.

Just get a ryedale or just the coin comparitor that is in it, should work for dimes nickels and quarters, just put a silver dime nickel or quarter (depending on what you are searching through) in the comparitor and it will kick out that type of coin. Run some test with it and dial in the sensitivity.

It says the machine wont sort silver on the Ryedale site. For $500 it should do more than sort through pennies :/.

Interestng, my comparitor will sort silver, but I don't have a ryedale, just one of the ones out of old slot machines.

im wondering can you get a ryedale to plug into a cigarette adapter!It would really help with high gas prices and save time.I know it would really drain your car battery but it would save money just go into the bank get your bag of coins dump in the ryedale and come back in in 3 minutes and say i decided to not get these.Just put back in what the machine seperated.SOUNDS like a good idea.

...You seriously underestimate how long it takes a Ryedale to sort through coins. And if you do that, your banks will hate you for it. If the bank went through the time and energy to get you a box or dig up a bunch of old halves/Ikes it is common courtesy to take them even if they are all skunks. If a bank is spending the time and energy to help you on something that is making the bank absolutely no money, the least you could do is be grateful for it.

I date check every coin so a machine that did dimes would be awesome!!
As it is I stick with the halves and nickles as the dimes are just too darn small to keep squintin' at
It seems if you are mechanically inclined its easy to build
If you are a klutz like me, keep huntin boxes is my advice...
