That's one for the melting pot! The maker mark is a gothic 'T' enclosing a lion rampant, facing right, which is the mark used by the Towle Manufacturing Company of Newburyport, Massachusetts. The pattern is known as 'Newbury / Old Newbury' and was introduced in 1900.

I wouldn't melt it down since it looks like it's inscribed "Hess". You could probably sell it to someone who collects Hess Trucks. The Hess family, of Hess Oil Corporation, may have owned this spoon.

I see Hess as well. Can't unsee it now. There is a upscale Jeweler named Hess in Lexington VA. They might purchase it.

When I found my first sterling spoon it was all beat up as well. My mom had just died and her first and second name was Lillie Bell. The spoon has lillies and bells on it! I thought, "thanks, mom!" I found a nice one on ebay and bought it. The twisted one will always stay the way it is as long as I live.
