Greetings, made several interesting finds today, will take a couple posts to cover,
first, a small pewter anchor, someone took a bit of time to make this Gem !
another pewter spoon bowl,
a piece of brass plate, ornamented with Fleur de lis ?
2 copper nails, Large Round, Small square, handmade, functional artistry.
Silver thimble, top missing ? Is this mark a hallmark of sorts?
And finally, brass bankbag # plate, was attached to a cylindrical mass of "stuff"
appeared to be leather & iron.

Posting other finds soon, Good Day, & Great Digs !!

Re: Pewter Thimble, Small Anchor, Money Bag, Early Copper Nails

nice collection of finds!!!!! :o

Re: Pewter Thimble, Small Anchor, Money Bag, Early Copper Nails

The anchor is by far the prize find--something that any digger would love to have in their collection.

The brass plate piece may actually be a musket or furniture dectoration.

And the thimble--are you sure it is pewter? It looks silver to me.

Regards,

Buck

Herbie that anchor is awsome. Would love to have one of those in my display case. I found one earlier this year that someone had made out of lead. But it was a lot more crude then yours is. I agree with BB that thimble does look like sterling silver. Nice finds my friend. :icon_thumleft:

The large copper nail is a ship spike .

Great looking anchor Herbie, I wonder what that was made for? :icon_scratch:
Maybe it fell off of a model ship ;D Love the thimble too.

Thanks to All for the replies !!
I had first listed the thimble as silver, I modified the post, as I have yet to find any silver at these sites, the environment eats it up, I find lots of silverplate flatware, but just the brass cores, considering the missing top and the perforations, also, the old pewter gets black and knobby. Changing post back to silver.
I should have included size reference for the brass bank plate, it measures approximately 6" X 2", and was curved around the mass as shown, the 4 digit #
corresponds to those on modern locking money bags, the mass it was found with was cylindrical, possibly a money transfer bag with handle for transport of large amounts of coinage, can find no records of a 'Hillsboro Savings Bank'
I think the anchor was made by a sailor/craftsman/boatbuilder in the same vein as a scrimshaw artist, some time on his hands, & a love of sailing & the Sea.

interesting finds  congrats
