Detector(s) used
Tesoro Silver Umax
I'm thinking about trading my Silver Umax for an Ace 250 or something, here's why. If somebody can give me info on how not to dig up junk.. please do so I can keep this and be happy with it. I keep my discrim on foil, or 5c.. and sensitivity at 7. When I hear a tone that sounds the same with disc. as it does with all metal, I dig. Usually getting junk bottlecaps, or large iron, or soda cans. When I'm looking for jewelery, toys, and coins. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

I still love being out MDing, and would rather find junk that not be out there at all. But 4 to 1 times I find junk. :( Just started a few days ago, and have about 5 hours experience. $1.50 in clad.

When you get a target - take your thumb and start turning
your disc nob up while your still swinging until you loose the target to get an
idea what it is. .you can run disc on zinc Penny's to
cut out most trash but you will loose depth and gold rings.
Gold jewelry are in the same range as trash so doing what
you have been doing is the norm....
Got to dig trash to find gold rings..

I have an ace 250, if you use the notch disc and knock out all foil and tabs, you can say goodbye to gold rings and nickels. You will still be digging crushed cans and aluminum twist tops, because the ace cannot consistantly tell them from things in the silver and copper range. There is no magic machine. I also have a vaquero and the same holds true for it in some ways. The best way to tell what the target is with the V or your silverumax, is to thumb the disc and see where the target drops out, also listen the the signal, is it choppy or broken. How big is the signal area of the target, a aluminum can or crushed one will have a larger signal area than a coin.

Thanks for the replies, I will try this out. I guess junk is just part of the dance.

Just as sqwbay said, the signal area tells alot. Get a quarter put it on the deck and get a smashed can, flip to all metal and check out the length of the signals. I know alot of the time you think that you have a quarter and its a freakin can. Also if I'm looking for deeper items I'll set my sens high on my Cibola and disc a little past tab, If I get a chopped signal I'll thumb disc down, if at min disc the signal is still chopped I'll dig, most of the time I'll be a good deep coin.

Exactly.

i made the mistake on takeing tabs out and missed a lot becuse the week after i went back and found a gold ring in the same area, i too at first didnt know about gold and trash. now i have no problem digging trash for gold rings, i like to help keep the world clean if i can

My friend mikael2021, do not trade your Silver uMax for a Ace 250, it would be a huge down grade, and I mean huge. Set your discrimination to just knock out a nail and dig the rest, you will be pleasently surprised at what theTesoro will find for you. I have owned/used two Ace 250's and the Silver will kick their butts any day of the week. Steve.

Tha Silver is a better detector if you can learn it.

Tha 250 is a let down after learnin tha Silver.

But you may like tha 250. You can turn off tha trash

and say byby to gold and most silver jewelry. But you

can find lots of pennies, dimes and quarters, along with

cans, tops, rusty iron and so on.

I know when I got an aluminum can. That's easy. Tabs

are hard to get around. I just dig um. I know how to tell

strong iron also. But it's tha same way you tell with tha 250.

Except with tha 250, tha display will jump around some.

But you don't really need tha display once you learn.

Truth is, they both do tha same thing. The Silver just does

it a little better.

Tha 250 will do almost as well as tha Silver. It's a good machine.

Just not as good as tha Silver. Even tha Compadre out

performs tha 250 in my hands. But it also out performs tha

Silver in some ways.

Just dig it. That will teach you what you seek.

Diggin lots of these,

will get you some of these.

And I don't dig that many rings compared to ear rings and

pendants and stuff.

Welcome to the club. If you want to find a gold ring and nickels your going to dig alot of trash!!! In my oppinion it doesnt matter which detector you use. Good luck.

I have the Silver Umax and the Ace 250. For pure coin shooting the ACE is excellent. For a variety of artifacts and coins, the Umax is tops. It's like everyone said, you have to work the discrimination a little bit more with the Umax, but you will soon learn to detect what is what by doing it and it will go deeper than the ACE in my experience. You are not handicapped at al with the Silver Umax and it is sooo much lighter than the ACE. Monty

I learned to just dig everything. i like to help with cleaning the land as much as i can. and i have been surprised to dig up a gold braclet 7inches after removing a pull tab from top of ground

On the Ace250 if you will copy the settings out of the Jewlery mode into the customs mode
then Disc out the Zinc penny you'll find coins & jewlery and lose a ton of that dang trash

Don't worry the zinc penny will reappear under the dime location

after you have detected for a while your ear will become trained to "hear" good targets. It's really hard to describe but everything has a different sound. Aluminum cans have a scratching sound whereas coins have a nice mellow sound. Try "sizing" the target while in the pinpoint mode. That, along with "thumbing" the discriminate knob and listening to the sound will improve your ability to determine what is under the coil. It's not 100% perfect, but it's as good as any of the three target id detectors i have used in the past.I can tell the difference between a zinc penny and a copper penny. Between a dime, a quarter and a nickle. All this by sizing and where they discriminate out..

As for jewelry I have made some decent finds by digging signals that didn't sound good. Jewelry comes in such varied shapes and sizes that it's impossible to put it into one category. Just set your discriminate to the lowest level you can tolerate and dig all signals.

If you searching the same place again and again (after holidays, picnics, sports events) you may want to go to all-metal and clean out an area such as a tot lot or under a swing set, under bleachers and eliminate annoying trash for future visits

CWNUT I really enjoyed reading your post. This entire post thread has been a wealth of information. Thanks, Shane

Nobody in this thread points out the obvious. RESEARCH MAN! there are still many places across this country, (No doubt where you are as well) That haven't been bombarded by pulltabs/aluminum cans/ etc etc. You find one of those places and everything you find will be interesting to some point or another. Try small towns with 100+ year old down towns and wait for them to tear down some of the buildings. There will be "NO" pulltabs or other crap. it's all about the research. Check out the sandborn maps site for your town (Or one near it). Look for ghost towns (There are 20 or so within a ten mile radius of where I live). The detector is just a tool. Your mind has to guide it.....

With the Tesoro you do not have to endure the irritating Ding Dong belltone.
