Why would he bury it, and then not take it with him? Its even a bit uncertain as to where he really landed.

too many people involved to get away with it ,and he would have had his head chopped off if found out ,so file under myth

Nice thought, but unlikely, It was extremely rare that a pirate, or in this case a privateer to bury treasure. You take it with you.
