Slave or Soldier ID Tag.....OR??????

Buddy of mine found this, on what we believe to be a civil war campsite, today where we found a number of other civil war relics....I don't know if it is a slave tag of sorts, or if it is some sort of soldier ID tag...

We found this tag on a civil war campsite....Here is my next question; How often are these found and what would be the value of something like this? I don't know a lot about theses tags ....just trying to learn a little ...Thanks!

In the past, I've seen them listed for $20-25 apiece, but they often go for quite a bit less on eBay. For example, a group of three tags sold for $19.95— and that was the only bid.
