Sleepy's Most Wanted (Roosevelt Dimes)

After having searched through $7,110 worth of dimes, I figured I'd get a Whitman Coin book (1946-1964 Dimes). I'm going to make it my goal to fill it by the end of the year! To the right is my "Most Wanted" List to help keep track of my progress. I want all of my finds to be from CRHing, so I won't be purchasing any of them. Here goes nothing!

Apparently the 1978 above is loosely referred to as a Vice Coin, as in, someone put multiple coins in a vice...perhaps trying to create an "error" coin. I'll still hold onto it. Maybe I'll post my "freak show" coins sometime.

Made a concerted effort to target CWRs today, since my dime boxes decided to jump on the struggle bus a couple weeks ago. We DID have a nice surprise in one of those CWRs...had a hard time getting a coin out that seemed a little too wide to be in a dime roll, like 19mm vs 17.9mm. I thought it was probably just another penny and in a way I was right since the British plural of penny is not pennies - it's pence, as in a 1946 6 pence! This is my 4th country for foreign silver CRHd (previously Dominican Republic, Canada, and Australia). Pics below:

Week Results Dimes $6165 (24.66 boxes) - 6 FDRs Notable: 1946 50% Ag 6 Pence (UK) Total Ag: 0.480 oz To say that this week's FDR numbers were disappointing would be an understatement. Here's a look at the disturbing trend we've been seeing through the first full five weeks of 2020: As you can tell, I've been pushing a blistering volume that is currently on pace for over $317K searched in 2020! However, the finds have steadily dropped off to the single digits. Why? Could it be the Christmas gift theory? People bring in a lot of rolled change at the end of the year to buy gifts...maybe. I know one guy told me they dump the red kettle money in the system immediately. That's gotta be a lot of new coin right there. Whatever the reason, we seem to have found ourselves in a CRHing desert, with no signs of an oasis. Let's be clear though, "find quantity" doesn't matter as long as we find the ones we're looking for...BUT the more silver FDRs we pull, the better chance we have of getting those final two Most Wanted dimes. Yes, the totals for each row are off to the far right. And yes, I allocate one column per week. I suppose you could do it monthly, but it's really just personal preference. For example, in the dimes row I just use the statement "=sum(B4:O4)", which adds up all my weekly volumes to produce the grand total you referenced. I have 2020 only going out to O4 right now (the week of 30 March - 3 April) because that is the week I have to transfer duty stations. Everything will get put on hold after that date. My overall workbook has 5 tabs at the bottom: All-Time, 2013, 2014_2018, 2019, and 2020. I CRH'd for 11 months in 2013, not a whole lot worth mentioning from 2014-2018, 6 months in 2019, and the 1 month+ in 2020 so far. My "All-Time" spreadsheet basically adds up the annual totals from each of the annual spreadsheets I just mentioned, once again using the sum function.

Speaking of grand totals, I was looking back in the forum last night and noticed you had a couple dime dream boxes a few years ago. Was it 98 and 71, I believe? I remember thinking when I got five boxes within a two week period ranging from 17-26 dimes each, "people are going to think I'm making this stuff up"! I literally can't even imagine boxes like the ones you found. I'm curious as to what your all-time CRHing numbers are then...what are your CRHing grand totals?

Sleepy: the 98 (65 mercs, 33 Rosies) is right, and the 71. But I don't have off hand my cum grand total numbers, as a matter of fact I may have lost my little tablet showing them. But I do know that I was nicely fitting in Rx bottles a total of 150 Rosies in each, and I'm up to bottle 32 ( so 150 x 32 ), and I believe about 4 bottles ? of mercs.
U da man when it comes to record keeping.

WOW! Just incredible...some good dates in there, too. Looks like about six "Category 1" FDRs (to include a '55D!), and several pre-40 mercs. Too bad that 1920's merc is unreadable.

Teller Tray: 1956 FDR

We had our most productive Tuesday in a month with 8 total FDRs. Hopefully that sets the tempo for the rest of the week. Also, I got my 3rd all-time teller tray find today. I know that term "teller tray" is kinda vague when people report it. Some consider it the teller giving you $3 in halves from their tray and at least one turns out to be silver. I report that as "$3 loose" because I specifically asked for halves. I consider a "teller tray" find when you're there for a specific transaction, you casually glance/examine the teller tray and notice what can only be a the glow of a silver coin. Then, you get that coin through whatever means you feel comfortable (i.e Can i get that one coin there, can i get $3 in quarters, etc.) My previous teller tray finds were a silver Georgia quarter and a '64 JFK. After I pulled today's teller tray find, i spent the next several minutes day dreaming about what it would have been like for that coin to be either the '55D or '54S. Next time...

Interesting...I consider a teller tray find anything I get loose handed to me from a teller. More often than not, I can't see what is in the tray. That being said, there have been times where I have seen a silver quarter or dime in the tray and specifically asked for that coin. I usually say that I collect coins and that one is an older one and ask if I can have it. I have been fooled sometimes and come up with a canadian dime or quarter

It's days like today that remind you why you love CRHing. Truly an up and down day. First, we started off with a huge find at the coin counter today: the 1943D. Found 11 1943's and 2 unknowns, so it's almost like "finally a mint mark!". You want to celebrate and talk to the tellers about your big find, but it's your dump bank, so you just dump and move on. Nice spread of foreigns as well, to include my first Venezuelan coin. Then I went through the first 2.5 boxes with nothing to show before a dramatic turn around back-to-back merc boxes! I held off on checking the mm on the mercs till the end. Needed the '41S still, but turns out we got everything but. With us pulling another '49D today (the 2nd toughest Denver in the set), the '55D has to know we're hot on his trail. The search continues...

I've definitely done that more than once. I was like...ah, just kidding. I've recently switched to saying, "oh cool, a Canadian! Are you guys allowed to give those out?" just to smooth it over a little better. A lot of tellers seem to think we as coin collectors love Canadian coins, so it makes sense to play to that. Also, makes you look like less of a "hey lady, gimme all your silver" kinda guy.

WHOA-HO-HO my friends! Pulled my oldest dime ever today: the 1901 Barber Dime! It MIGHT grade AG3. With now 3 unique barbers found in the past 3.5 months, it looks like we're working our way to collecting the entire set! Immy laid down the challenge after the first Barber Dime find on 29 October...

That's a stellar find right there, and only 74 more Barbers to go!

A lot of tellers seem to think we as coin collectors love Canadian coins

I must be the odd one around here, I actually like finding Canadians for the most part. I mean sure, I'd rather take a silver or wheatie, but they're still a bit better than "2017D penny #77,000". Besides, gotta finish the Canadian sets too.

Tuesday boxes are starting to heat up! With today's 1962 silver QEII, that puts me at 11 of 17 in that set. Man, was about to open a roll and realized I was staring at a reverse 'S' mint FDR ender. That'll get your heart going. Thought it could be the '54S, but it ended up being the '53S...Also, the 1926 50 Centimes coin is pretty cool as well.
