Slitting open half dollar rolls: Technique?

OK. I have opened an account at a bank which will take my half dollar dumps. $3000 to $4000 per week, no problem. Special thanks to namster, Gilmore Happy, and all others who gave me advice.

The bank is a small, local operation. They want me to give them precounted containers of coins. I'm thinking "No problem. I can just dump my boxes into the plastic bags as I go. I can throw in a loose coin for each silver I pull out and for any shorted rolls." Then I asked if they weigh the bags. "No, we are going to have to count them."

I really don't like the thought of these folks having to count out $4000 worth of halves each week. I think after a few weeks they are going to hate seeing me come in the door. It occurs to me that there may be a way to lessen their workload, by doing something which I have seen mentioned here. I would like to be able to open the rolls, edge search, and then pack the somewhat intact rolls back into the boxes.

Is there a preferred technique to open a roll for edge searching, without destroying the roll? What kind of blade? How do you keep from scoring the edge of the coins? Anything else I should know? These are machine wrapped String rolls BTW.

put them in the coin lok bag and tell them to ship it out.

Take a pen, and push a a 45 degree angle to the edge of where the wrap meets the coin and pry upward. then start to work your way around the whole wrap with that technique until you can work a finger in there and pull it flat out. then you can unload and reroll. after doing this long enough, you can become very quick at it. it is especially easy with half dollars... try dimes lol

This is what I do. Is there a faster way? I've gotten pretty fast... but it still takes awhile.

K, first of all, when you hear a bank say "we are going to have to count them"..... They are not talking about doing it one by one, each coin by hand... They send that bag to their main vault. (if its small branch like you mentioned, their "main vault" may be on sight). Point is, they use a machine to count the coin, and it doesnt take much time at all. -once they count it, they send it off to brinks/loomis/etc... to repeat the buy-cull-dump-count-wrap repeat process..

So with that said... Do not slit open the roll, and put them in a bag like that, this will just double or triple the amount of time it takes the bank guy/gal to get them out of the paper and then count them.......
