Sliver coin question

Correction on the above. Halves 65 - 70 are 40%. Also there are some bicentennial that are 40%, and some of the later proofs are 90%. The only silver nickels are the war nickels, dated 1942 - 1945. And even then not all 1942 are war nickels. If you have one of these dates and there is a large mint mark (P,D,S) above the dome on monticello on the reverse, it is a silver war nickel.

To answer FresnoBoy's first question, all dimes, quarters and halves dated 1964 or older are 90% silver.

Wayne is correct on the 40% clad era and "war nickels".

Starting in 1992, they added a second type of proof which is 90% silver. So 1992-current you have regular clad (copper-nickel) proofs and silver proofs. Look at the edge and it will be obvious which is which.
