Oh what joy! got permission to search 17 acres of woodlands., collared shirt & Pro looking business card helped.
owner states it was used 1770s for militia training, it borders a town 'meeting House'
with a 1770 date on the front. has a livestock pound, and an old cemetary with unreadable or unmarked stones.
gave it 2 hours yesterday, started at the most obvious spot, Highest hilltop.
The lack of any metal targets surprised me, I went in a spiral pattern down the hill, concentrating on cover spots, Rock outcrops, old tree stumps, etc.
Finds were rather disappointing, few modern(well not colonial) casings & shells, iron & copper nail, clad quarter.
What gives me hope that this site is unsearched and the artifacts are just very deep, is the bottle dump I found, these are clearly mid/late 1800s, and were surface finds,
can see more underneath in the frozen ground. I believe other hunters would have taken these.
most of the soil is leaf litter to about 8", then soft loam beneath.
Will return and hit it again, Slow, slow slow.
Great Digs to You All! :icon_thumleft:

With that type of potential I would follow it up with a little research if you remain unsuccessful.

That's a good start...I really like those bottles! Worm Expeller...gross! ;D

The lack of targets and the willingness on the part of the homeowner might mean another thing... someone's been around..... However, I would strongly urge you to go deep with a big coil since there aren't that many targets and dig out the more repeatable signals if you can......even if they don't sound real good.... go for the repeatable weaker signals that are deeper than 6 inches...HH M.

A little help for you:

Raleigh Co (Freeport, IL) ~ he started in 1885, in his mom's kitchen and then opened a factory in 1889; factory is still operating today. The bottle is from the late 1880s-very early 1900s.

Tuttle's (Boston, MA) ~ He was a stable owner in 1883; medicine manufacturer in 1885. Company opened from 1894-1968.

Dr. True's (Auburn, ME) ~ This link shows the same bottle (dated to be from the 1880's):

http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/antique-dr-trues-elixir-worm-expeller

Dr. John Fogg True, from Exeter, moved to Auburn, Androscoggin County, ME in 1853. The next census lists him as a physician. He built his "laboratory" in 1877. Dr. J.F. True’s sons, Edward and James, were listed as working with a medicine company in Auburn into the first quarter of the 20th century.

Oh, nice finds !

Congrats on some nice bottles and good luck on your return trip(s)!

Good stuff Herbie. that place holds a lot of potential. You find the hot spot on those 17 acres and maybe a fellow New Englander will come and help you dig it. ;D Good luck on future hunts Herbie.
