Sm. Buckle - Usage? Approx. date? (Colonial?)

Found this at a site at least 200 years old that I hear has been pretty pounded but it was in a hole with, IIRC, at least 2 pieces of iron. Size is a hair over 1" wide and 7/8" long. What would it have been used for? How old is it?

clean the dirt out of the hole! I'd say a locking buckle for a harness, a pin of some sort may have went through the hole
