I found this bronze item two days ago in the yard of an 1805 house in the town where I live. I estimate it to be from the early 1900's but don't have a clue as to what it is.
When I dug it I originally thought it might be a faucet knob because I grabbed the base first. The base is threaded and it has "Pat Applied For" stamped on the back. It appears to have "England" on the head. The treads are about the size of a faucet handle shaft. It is very comfortable when grabbed from above with two fingers.
The pedestal with the hole in it on the back throws me, it is as if a ring or cord was attached to it. The rod that someone put in the hole in the back is neat in itself in that it is tapered on both ends.
Is it a plumbing pull of some kind? Does it go on a cane or walking stick? The threads are too large for a lamp finial.
Any ideas??
