If the cogs get thicker as they go up it could be for gapping spark plugs.

That's what I was thinking.

Good idea. I did check the landings all the way around. They do not get thicker. Maybe some sort of locking device or puzzle piece? I immediatey thought 'knock-out' myself. The surface is a nickle-alloy-type finish. At this point, since I have no clue what it is, I can not rule ANYTHING out.

It's the scrap of some sort of spline or gear after it was stamped out in a punch press. seen hundreds of thousands of them

child-proof throwing star! jk ;)

as was already said..spark plug gapper would have different sizes on each cog.
and it isnt a knock out on an electrical box..those are plain round..(all the ones Ive seen anyway) the nut to secure the conduit to the box would have cogs like that tho....

hmmmz

They made electrical box knockouts like too. I don't see them now days but I do remember them. I think Baron Von De Kalb got it right off the bat. It looks galvanized to me.

After some thinking and flashbacks....You may be right......hmmm...."satan varnish" Steel OR Aluminium.......Yep...Good Job Baron! This is what I was thinking...although I have seen gappers similar to the knockout...it isnt as big......

Heres what I was talkin about..the cog piece is the nut that secures the conduit thru the knockout hole and is threaded in the center.

All the knockouts ive seen are just plain round. Not doubting anyone ..just ive never seen one with cogs like that.

The knock out tabs I'm talking about predate the ones in the powder coated panel you posted.

I remember when I was a kid my pops had a circular keychain with screwdriver blades around it that looked like the object found - but I think the blades were different sizes. I searched the web & found this pic. Its just a guess.

Well upon further review I guess it would need a hole in it wouldn't it??

I'm listening. I do voice and data work, fiber optics, and CCTV.. I have seen more junction boxes than I ever cared to look at and of many different ages. I realize that I have not seen every make, model, and material of j-box.

The material that we are looking at NON-MAGNETIC. The only metal non-magnetic j-boxes I know are aluminum. A knock out would have flash marks from where the box was pressed or perforated. This has none of those marks. All edges and points are exactly the same.

I can not agree on whether or not it is from a spline gear. That is not my area.

The 'obverse' is very slightly rounded tat the circumference indicating to me some kind of wear. There are a couple of the 'teeth' that have very small rounding to them. This indicates to me that this was in use for retaining, locking, holding, or securing something else. It also shows me that it moved against something else metal.

The 'reverse' is perfectly flat from the center all the way to the circumference.
