My personal bank accounts are with a large multi-state and a large credit union, but there are a few small "mom-and-pop" banks in my area with maybe 3-8 branches in total. Has anyone noticed any difference in success rates searching via the locals vs. the big boys? If so, anything in particular I should ask for or try with them?

If that is working for you than keep on doing that. It takes a larger bankroll to order boxes of the larger denoms. I don't call banks to see what coins they have. I just stop in & ask. This keeps them from searching the coins before you get there. Also if you get a lazy teller, they will just tell you no without looking. My only suggestion would be to ask if they have half dollars or old/large dollars (don't say silver dollars). You could also ask if they have any odd looking coins also. I never say the word silver to any tellers.
