I found this piece in a 1905 post office site in Central South Dakota. It feels like it could be silver but is not stamped. The front side has some nice detail and hopefully enough of the form could fetch a ID. Thank you! The piece is very thin, perhaps 1/16” thick

Not sure but maybe it has something to do with part of a letter opener being from that site . Someone will ID it probably

Looks a lot like-
Half of a hair barrette.
Design is Navajo like.

Kind of like this, but with a fancy raised middle piece that has fallen out-
-The slot would be in the middle-

They're usually really thin metal and the back attachment is like this-

Thank you! I like the odds of this being silver researching similar designs for hair

You're welcome.
Hope it is silver.
Does the back have a name or anything?

No marks. I shared these pics with Grok on the X app, and it agreed with the Navajo Silver barrette, thought it was early too. Most likely made from melting Spanish silver or American silver coins, based on the blotchy and shiny exterior and handmade engravings. I super happy with this piece, thank you for the Navajo tip!

Grok makes many mistakes.
Possible best to go get it tested at a pawn shop or jewelry shop just to make sure.
