Any ideas?

What kind of salve Scott ?

Any of a plethora of untested medicinal salves (with a predominate base of petroleum jelly)good for around the farm or house. (For people AND animals. :tongue3:)
I'm guessing from early 20th Century.

Scott

PS. I couldn't venture a guess of a particular salve or manufacturer without a taste sample. ;D

Hmmm. I think you need to clean it up a bit but it looks like an ink well cap kinda.

Hi Big...

Do you have a picture of the under side of that cap?
It does kind of look like the picture that you posted.
One of my pics shows the under side... It has 4 small holes.

Sorry I cant find the old thread.
Heres the only other pic I have. There are different shapes and sizes.

Any chance of cleaning it up a bit with water and a soft brush so we can see it better?

Based on the size compared to the ruled notebook paper and the center opening on the underside (threads?), I'm sticking with salve or toothpaste cap made of lead.

I have found several types of lead caps still attached to some tubes over the years.

Exactly what size is it and are there threads in the center hole on the underside? It's lead, right?

Best,
Scott

Considering the size I think you are correct. I see now what appears to be threads and what appeared to me to be 2 large holes all the way through are just corroded out I think. The 4 small holes on the underside may be mold injection marks. (the pic is way too dark on my screen to see anything. I should have tried to lighten it a bit before guessing lol)

I tried to clean up the piece that I found. Didn't really reveal anything.
But, take a look at this old Zebco Reel...
The piece I found kind of looks like the Drag adjuster on the reel.

Im afraid this is one of those items that is just too corroded and we cant tell what it is by the pictures. I see what looks like an 8 on both sides of the center. :dontknow: If the center hole has threads, the most likely choice would be an ointment tube cap.
