I've got one just like that - not sure what it was for, but it's obviously not naturally formed.

Welcome to Treasurenet.
It was probably formed by a glacier, check out the base of every conveyor belt at a gravel pit, and there will be dozens of spherical stones that roll back down the belt and hop off.
They are formed by slowly being rolled and ground under tons of ice, still very cool, and may have been picked up and used for something by prehistoric man, but probably naturally formed.
