sniffy came down and i took him to a couple of my sites down here.
he got a nice little plain shoe buckle frame.it's the tiniest shoe buckle i ever seen! must have been off a little boys boot.
no coins today today but dug some decent sounding targets.
of course a oxknob and the MOTHER of all oxknobs later in the day. read half a dollar on sniffy's machine.he said dave dig this and if it's a coin we cut it in half so i dug and it turned out to be a huge oxen horn tip guard he said its yours dave! what a guy
look at the size of the grub that popped out while digging the toe tap piece!
i dug a kinda neat heart locket type thingy...how fitting being valentines day tomorrow
a brass ring with a set screw to open the ring?could this be a ring that went through a bulls nose perhaps?
and one of my last targets was a big blob of lead..so i thought. almost tossed it before i soaked my finds.
glad i didn't!!!!! turns out its a lead eagle head.back end is hollow and seems to still have wood inside.a small hole on the top to drive a nail through into wood. any ideas guys? military ?? flag pole topper?
diggin was ok for the most part and just nice to get out.

THE WELLS & PROVOST CAP IS FROM THIS BELOW

intresting hunt bud! i like the eagle thingy. willy

Cool digs...and you are correct, the hinged loop is a nose loop. It should be pointed where it opens.

excellent finds !! I really like the locket and the eagle ! Which I believe is a fireplace tool adornment !!

hi,
i was told it's a ornament off a carriage or sleigh.i doubt a fireplace poker would have a wooden stick? there is still wood inside the hole. so i'm swaying from the fireplace tool idea.but hey...ya never know :dontknow:

Great finds!!!

I really like the heart, and I was thinking flag pole topper about the eagle, but who knows...

Heart locket is cool ,is there a stone in the star design, I imagine this was a nice Valentines day gift 160 years ago ::) did someone get lucky with that one ??? :icon_scratch: ox horn thing is a first :icon_scratch: , nose ring :icon_scratch: and that eagle :dontknow: plus that freaky fat a$$ grub :o leads me to believe you had a strange and unusual day .Weird relics are interesting ..good job finding them 8)

Great finds! And even a Valentines Day heart!

Great relic hunt. Interesting that the eagles beak is joined at the end as if it may connect or hang ??

Nice relics :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright: No Winter stopping you guys ;D

Could the Wells & Provost lid be from a 25 lbs gunpowder canister as claimed this link?:

http://www.horsesoldier.com/catalog/c0024.html
i don't think so.its from a canning container.i doubt you could fit 25 lbs of gun poweder in one of these?
http://www.fokh.org/19th Century Food Preservation.htm

Got you :icon_thumright: Is the canning lid lead?
not quite sure exactly if it's lead and some other white metal mix.it's heavy but not as soft as lead..it's definitely not brass or copper.it held up quite well for whatever white base metal it is.

Is that eagle a flag finial? Nice grub, did ya eat it?
