So should I start collecting the copper pennies?

I was just listening to WRDU 106.1 from Raleigh Durham. The penny issue was presented. I had heard rumor but this was the first time I heard it on the radio. They mentioned this website: Citizens for Retiring the Penny

So my question is, if the penny is got rid of can the copper ones be turned in for scrap? They will no longer currency right?

I don't think they will stop making the Pennie and I am real sure they Never will lift the ban on melting them.
Even if the do stop making them there are plenty of them out there to last for many years to come.
I have saved all my Pennies sense about 1990.Lol

As a monetary unit it will always be needed. It represents "1." If you have no representation for 1...you will have to round up or round down to the nearest coin.

Businesses would price items so that with taxes they just so happen to always get rounded up. At Bob's Bait N Tackle that means very little. To a national retail chain like Sears...
it could mean many millions of "free" dollars in their pocket.

Copper pennies (in the US the correct term is cents) will absolutely positively go down as one of the all-time worst investment fantasies of 2012. Its illegal to melt them and you cannot ship more that 100 bucks worth overseas. Its chump change and pure fantasy. Dont try it. 1000000 pennies is ten thousand bucks. Chump change. The logistics alone rule out any dream of profit. Do the math. Dont try it. Go tectin.

I have 2 old time whiskey barrels and 1 nail keg that I use for plant stands
The Government will not let me fill them back up with Whiskey so I guess Pennies will do.
Just think, in 20 or 30 more years when they are Full. I will be able to buy another Gallon of Gas with my Chump Change.

I strongly believe if we ever see a post economic collapse or fallout that copper as well as silver would be traded in place of a fiat… or paper currency.

I would like to think the government saw the value of copper in June of 1982 when they decided to strip the copper out of the penny and replace it with Zinc. Just like the generation of the 60s was robbed of its silver coins our generation was also robbed of real wealth.

I've seen people on the highway collecting cans never factoring the cost of the gas they use. It's ok by me because I like clean highways.
Unless an activity is pure joy the effort should be considered. I see no joy in pennies or cans.
