Just thought I would change things up a bit and ask a backwards question: Scenario, freshwater detecting with a VLF detector (start with an example of a Tiger Shark b/c of the sensitivity to thin gold) so as to not have to dig a ton of junk..... Along comes "Joe Someguy" and asks you to help him find his keys, or sunglasses, or watch or something...... Best to head back to the truck for a PI unit or can a VLF unit pull through well enough?

Whos got opinions to weigh in?

90% of keys now a days are brass - most sunglasses are brass and plated or painted (if they made them out of steel - would rust from your skins oils or sweat)
a lot of watches are plated brass - have brass inerds -
if stainless -they will still read midway not as iron
at least on my machines in ID mode - I hunt in all metal and try to dig it all

Ok, a ton of iron is worth about $300,so if you don't want it I'll take it.

Well thats pretty interesting! So heres a newbie question: Platinum, Tungsten, Titanium, etc..... Mens rings tend to favor these other precious metals, any issues finding those in freshwater?
As for the scrap steel, I have a1/2ton truck, so I'll just stockpile the nails for a while and see how many it takes to earn that $300:tongue3:

Even with the discrimination set up to 2 or 3, a Tiger Shark is still going to find Iron and other metals. I have found jewelry and rings of all kinds of metals at those settings. But finding something specific that someone has lost can be a challenge because they rarely have the exact location where the item was lost.

Some of the older detectors were set up with small iron discrimination at the minimum discrimination setting of the detector. Not to much trouble as you would normally have an all metal setting. For specific items you could use a VLF with a learn feature and just wave a similar set of sunglasses/key or earring in front of the coil. The detector then ignores everything else. Best to do a few sweeps from different directions/angles to cover how the lost item has ended up but it saves a lot of time.

I want to dig ALL target when my Sov GT and Excalibur detect.:find:
