soldier's glasses?

I found these glasses last summer while metal detecting in an area that Sherman's troops passed through.Up the hill from this area, some locals found a cannonball in the old road bed.Am I right to assume that these could be a soldier's glasses that fell from his pocket?

Re: soldier's glasses?

Welcome to TreasureNet!

What an excellent find! They are in great shape!

As for belonging to a soldier?

I dunno... has anyone else ever had the chance to walk there and loose their glasses?

Could they just as easily be farmer's glasses?

Could they just as easily have been lost by someone 75 years later?

If a soldiers they woulda been marching, camping, or riding through - and in my mind I see them being dameged by massive troop movement.

Unless there are other clues, I'm not sure you'll ever know... I do however think they are prolly period, and it must be an exciting one-of-a-kind find for you! :)

Welcome to TNet, jgunnells!

What a cool find! And in great shape too!

They do look old, the way the ear piece wraps around the ear. Perhaps a local optician could give you an idea of how old they are.

Thanks for sharing.

excellent discovery cool set of specks

Re: soldier's glasses?

they look to be of the right vintage. if not lost by a soldier then by someone in the 1800s or very early 1900s. nice find!

Re: soldier's glasses?

Where are you located? Was they in something when you found them, like a glass case?

Re: soldier's glasses?

No,they weren't in anything.I found them in a wooded area that hasn't seen any farming.I was very careful to get them back home and when I cleaned them off,I couldn't help but think that I may be the first one to look through them in probably 100+ years. Thanks for all the great things that have been said about them.

Usually I don't come back to finds and comment twice - but these glasses are just fantastic! To dig those undamaged after so long... wow. :o

I would be excited about the find too. :) WAY cooler than a bullet or button... er, I mean buckle. :D

Those dainty personal items are extreamly hard to come by "in the field".

As a CW relic hunter, I can't help but get fired up about buttons, buckles, and bullets...but I'll be the first to say that a minieball really had little connection with the soldiers that carried it. They were only valued for the carnage they could inflict--and perhaps as a handy item to carve on with a knife. Buttons, buckles, and knapsack hooks are a little more personal--there were fewer of them made, and they were more functional...but this item--CW or not--coming out of the ground in undamaged condition--it's spectacular! Here is an item with as much connection to someone of the CW era as a locket, wedding band, or ID disc. And too look through them for the first time in so many years? That must've been an experience to raise goosebumps.

Well done.
