Some kind of clasp or buckle?

Found this on a farmstead that dates back to the 1870s. I think it's gold plated brass. It says "Pat. Dec 2nd 84". Anyone know what it came from?

Hi, to me it kind of looks like a type of sealing lid. Maybe for a high-end bottle? (medicine?) It looks like it compresses a paper, rubber, or cork seal. Just my thoughts. Neat find.

Thanks for the reply. Could be. I forgot to mention that there was some iron rusted in place on the back and it kind of held the two pieces together. The iron crumbled away when I cleaned it. It kind of looked like links of a chain or band.

Had a double bar that went across the one shown and if I remember correctly they were used as cuff link, or cuff button.
