First thought was some kind of hose/pipe attachment but the three metal fins are peculiar.

1/2" diameter on bottom, 1/4" diameter on top, 3/4" tall

Certainly peculiar. Where did you find it? I hope someone can identify it; you have me very curious. Certainly, looks like something to do with water but very small.

I found it in the yard of my mother's house in Sudlersville MD. The house dates to 1910 but the property seems to have been in use since at least sometime in the 19th century. I found a circa 1850-1865 State Militia Panel Plate there once.

Thanks Kyle. I anticipated a yard find which may help with identification. I wonder if part of an old fountain or irrigation system. Just thinking out loud.

I'm guessing lawn sprinkler tip. "Atomic age" or 1940's - 50's.
Looking again the hole doesn't appear to go through for spraying.

Maybe the barrel tip from a toy space gun?

This looks really close. A ray gun of some sort. Two good ideas. Ray gun or wheel nut. Good job to both of you. Maybe close to solved.

Thanks for all the great ideas/suggestions so far. I cleaned some more dirt out of it and can now confidently say it is some kind of nozzle or attachment intended for conveying water. The center "nozzle" or whatever it's called now moves freely... Maybe with this knowledge in mind we can get closer to figuring out what it is!
