Some type of maul?

Found this object in the woods in Connecticut. Look like some type of maul but has no sharp edges. Thanks for the help.

I'm usually pretty good with old tools, but Im stumped. It obviously had a handle, and my guess is that it would've been used in conjunction with a sledgehammer to split wood. First you would split with the thin part, then rotate the tool 90 degrees to widen the split. Now you can test this theory by putting a handle on it and trying it out.
