Some type of tool?

[Dug]

Dug this from a mid 1800s house site. Have dug at least two similar ones before and thought maybe they were some sort of horse tool. I think someone suggested they were a gate latch. This one has a small hook in the end.

Is this a tool or a gate part? It is iron.

They both appear to be hand-forged, but as to application I've got nuthin'.

maybe a trunk latch. The slit makes me think of a twist tensioner.

Looks like a crude sorta caliper for something.
