Just an update.
Went by there and met the lady who lost the ring, her hubby and MIL.
Scenario as they related it to me.
Woman in back seat of car had ring off, in the hood of her coat while applying lotion to hands. She was not wearing her coat, had it on her lap. Car going downhill on Christmas Eve in snowfall and winding streets had to turn left into an upward banked side street.
Car did not make the 90+ degree turn, slid forward about 45 degrees from it's direction of travel. Stopped 18-20 feet into lawn of corner home. Woman exited rear right side of car, forgetting ring was not on her finger. She then puts on her coat and walks immediately to the rear of the car, toward the curb they had just gone over.
The men in the car got out as their mother drove backward and they pushed from the front. Car is front wheel drive. They got car out and left, went up the block to one of the men's houses where presents and goodies were removed from the car and carried in by woman who lost ring and others.
Conditions were snowing, layered snow on lawn from the several recent falls with depths from 6-10 inches due to drift.
They got a detector and a shovel and on Christmas day went back there, shoveling the area around the rear right side of the car from the midpoint under the car to about 6 feet off to the passenger side.
They took all shoveled snow and put it in the street to look for the ring. They did not find the ring.
I got there about 11:00 a.m. this morning and started looking, it was apparent where the car slid into the yard. Only one tire track remained to indicate where the car had slid and rested. It was fairly direct, no swerving or lateral sliding during the entry into or reversal from the yard.
Used my F70, it was like someone had a broadcast tower on the edge of the yard, perhaps an underground electric fence for dogs. No dog prints were present however so it may have been a previous owner. Located one target, apparent coin that read in the mem cent/clad dime range consistently and using my Garret Pro Pointer and F70 I determined it was most likley a coin 2-3 inches deep. No other targets were in the area.
Got my CZ5 out and covered the area again and only the one coin target near the curb showed up. None of the snow they deposited in the street was present, either melted or plowed off. The folks there said they did not think any snow plows came by after they hunted the area but were unsure.
45 minutes later I was certain the ring was not in the area. I worked the area toward the house from the site, through undisturbed snow for about 20 feet in case the ring had been ejected by spinning tires should it have gotten in to the tire's path. We walked up the block to the other house and checked along the now shoveled driveway were they went after the accident. No indication there either. The Mother in law asked if I could use the MD inside and around the car, well you'all know that dog don't hunt.
I advised they recheck the car, exhaustively and the house they went to, furniture, gift wrappings, the most unimaginable places. I also suggested they check back with the homeowner at the accident site after the snow melts. If the ring fell into the tire path and the tire was spinning, it could have tossed it outward in any number of directions.
Lastly I asked them to send me an email if they found it because I like happy endings. But not all hunts turn out the way we'd like them to.
