Don? I think it's a skunk . looking for grubs and such under the loose bark? Unfortunately dogs like the WORST of smells . So don't go camping out looking for THE picture , please?

CG, never gave skunk a thought, but guess it is possible, could one reach up to almost 3 feet up the tree though? I am hoping to hear back from NJ DEP and see what they "guess" LOL.

Skunks can be 27" long and with the stretch and the reach of the arms 36" is not out of the question. They have extremely sharp claws and could shred a tree like that.

Porcupine is a possablity also? They get from 27-36" long and will eat tree bark in seach of salt. Nice call.

I'd be curious to hear the DEP's guess too. Can't wait Don!
