Hello,

Can someone explain what is happening with my Sovereign GT, by watching the following video:

It is all about nickel-copper 1 Dirham coin. This coin is not a magnetic alloy.

With the discrimination and notch at the minimum, why the Sovereign is not detecting the coin? Why is the threshold going null, if this is not a ferrous material?

The shiny coins are not detected in discrimination mode. Only the ones exposed for more time to the beach environment are.
Is this normal?

Thanks in advance,

Pedro

Did you try using it with the iron mask off? I suspect that those coins have a lot of iron in them....Probably stainless steel. Look up the coin and see what it's made of. You may have to hunt in all metal to find them.

Thanks for the reply cudamark.

Yes, I tried iron mask off! I think the purpose of iron mask will not be shown on this experiment.

The information that i got from the internet is that is a copper-nickel alloy. I'm not aware of the iron percentage.

The 1 dirham is made of cupronickel- a copper alloy containing nickel and strengthening elements such as iron and manganese. Apparently there is enough iron in these to cause a null on the GT. I would like to see the FE-CO numbers on an Etrac or CTX.

Thanks for the reply Fletch88.

I´m not convinced that is the case, but it might be! Unfortunately i do not know anyone with a Sovereign, to see the response from another machine.

ps: Probably i will have to send 1 dirham coin to a good soul, to make the test for me:)

How much would it cost to mail it to states?

It would probably be cheaper and easier to just go down to your local coin shop and buy one. How much could they be?

I'm looking for one eBay. Some say Morroccan 1 dirham others are from United Arab Emirates. Which coin/ year is that one in your video?

The guy in any coin shop around here would look at me like a hog looking at a wristwatch if I ask him for a 1 dirham! Lol

Mine is UAE. When i say "new coins", I'm just refering the ones that i have in my pocket, and not the coins found in the beach after some aggressive environment exposure.
The coins year are in Arabic...

ehehe. I would appreciate very much if you do that for a stranger :)

Here is the reply from Minelab regarding the above:

"Hello Pedro,

Coins are often made from different materials from year to year (and can oxidize over time in the ground) and can therefore react differently to the detector. E.g. some modern coins have a ferrous core and are plated to look normal.

It certainly appears that the newer coins are ferrous, but there is a small chance that some non ferrous items are also discriminated even with the Disc and Notch settings at minimum. If you want to find these coins, then All Metals is your only option.

The Sovereign’s Discrimination and Notch filters are limited in their ability to differentiate targets that have similar properties.

As previously mentioned a more advanced detector, such as Minelab’s CTX 3030 or E-TRAC, may be required to separate the pull tabs and coins in your location.

Iron Mask function on the Sovereign is very subtle and not often used.

Regards"

"Hi Pedro,

I do not think your detector is malfunctioning.

If you look at this website, some 1 dirham coins from 2012 are Nickel plated Steel and others are Nickel plated Copper

United Arab Emirates coins - Numista
United Arab Emirates Coins, Coins of UAE, Arab Emirates Dirham - uCoin.net

I hope this helps

regards"

So..they are correct! The coins from 2012up are Nickel plated Steel!! I'm almost sure that my coins that null the threshold are dated 2012!

Thanks for all the help! Great forum and great Minelab service!
